These are the first 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold coins ever made by the United States Mint. Introduced in 2006 in a one-ounce version only, fractional coins became available in 2008. Both the obverse and reverse design was duplicated from James Earle Fraser’s motif of the Buffalo Nickel, with the addition of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the bottom of the left reverse. Both Mint State and Proof versions have been produced individually and in collector’s sets.
