Authorized by the Act of March 3, 1875, this short-lived coin was only issued from 1875 to 1878, as the public was confused by its similarity to the well-established quarter dollar. More than a million pieces were struck in its first year, but this number dropped drastically by 1876. Only proof specimens were minted in 1877 and 1878. None were struck for circulation.
