Originally called the Australian Gold Nugget, the Gold Kangaroo is struck by the Perth Mint in Western Australia. The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint, and was originally charged with manufacturing British Sovereigns. The original reverse featured the famous gold nugget discovered in Australia in 1869. The coin was redesigned with the iconic Australian kangaroo in 1989. The obverse features a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England. the Australian Gold Nugget, is a rarity among gold bullion coins. Its design is changed annually, making each year a limited edition.
