The American Gold Eagle is the most popular gold bullion coin. The design and program for the American Gold Eagle began in 1986 in an effort to compete in the new worldwide bullion coin market. The obverse of this coin has a design taken from the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, which was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse depicts a “family of eagles” motif that was designed by Miley Busiek. The American Gold Eagles can be bought in increments, including 1/10 ounce ($5), 1/4 ounce ($10), 1/2 ounce ($25), and 1 ounce ($50).
